Hear me people: We now have to deal with another race--small and feeble when our fathers first met them, but now great and overbearing. Strangely enough they have a mind to till the soil and the love of possessions is a disease with them. These people have made many rules which the rich may break but the poor may not. They take their tithes from the poor and weak to support the rich and those who rule.
...trudging into the distance in the bleeding stinking mad shadow of Jesus...the Lord out of dust had created him, had made him blood and nerve and mind, had made him to bleed and weep and think, and set him in a world of loss and fire... --Flannery O'Connor

They Make Many Rules the Rich May Break But the Poor May Not
Some prophetic commentary from Sitting Bull about the dawning of America:
All I can say is, wow, prophetic indeed. A great judge of men's character.
ReplyDeleteSo very true. So very sad.
ReplyDelete"...the love of possessions is a disease with them..."
ReplyDeleteIf we were sick then, we must be in code blue now.
Good description of Washington and American Polotics in general.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, perhaps "they pass laws that apply to the unwashed masses but not to themselves nor to the elites that prop them up?" Couldn't have described BHOcare better myself. Love the irony. qb
ReplyDeleteHe sounds like the Old Testament prophet Amos. Economic injustice was a major theme of the prophets. God often spoke to this issue of justice.
ReplyDelete@ Kevin W. Bridges - Yes, otherwise known as (Long)Standing Bull.
ReplyDeleteHis critique of our tax policy is still quite relevant. In a lot of states, the rich pay a far lower tax rate than the rest...and in a lot of places, like my own state, politicians are raising taxes on the poor in order to subsidize even more tax cuts for the rich. Here in Ohio. The top 1% pay almost half the state tax rate paid by the bottom 20%. You can find out about your own state by Googling ITEP Who Pays?
