Slate has a slideshow with commentary about skull-themed fashion, then and now.I've written about the Vanitas artwork in the Christian tradition, where skulls, hourglasses or bubbles were inserted into pictures to provide a mortality reminder.
I actually have a skull (not a real one) in my office for just this purpose.
