Farmer Jesus

This last winter at one of Brenden's basketball games I was sitting in the stands. I was wearing my overalls. This caught the eye of one the students, I was told later. He asked one of the teachers, "Who is the Farmer Jesus sitting up there?"

"That," the teacher replied, "is Dr. Beck."

Whenever I wear my overalls I always get that farmer comment. Just this last week at Freedom Fellowship my friend Sally (author of the recently published memoir Loves God, Likes Girls) said I looked just like her grandpa, who was a farmer. I particularly get these comments when I wear a bandana, which I wear from time to time to keep my bangs out of my eyes.

Anyhow, a few curious friends and readers have wanted pictures of this look of mine. Well, this past week my friend Jim took some pictures at Freedom Fellowship. I was preaching and rocking my Farmer Jesus look.

(BTW, if you look at Jesus back there in the baptistry, I do sort of look like his older brother.)

Incidentally, I'm presenting this week at the Christian Scholars Conference at Lipscomb. I'm seriously considering hitting the campus looking exactly like this.

  1. I'm going to assume you don't get weirded out when people you don't know come up to you at a conference and say hello. Because that's what I plan to do at CSC.

  2. Jesus is clearly encouraging you to try a lilac T-shirt and a purple bandana to bring out your warm skin tones and creative side. At least that's how I interpret his stance.
