The Parable of the Tradition-Maxxer and the Non-Denominational Protestant

And Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in the superiority of their tradition and regarded other Christians with contempt:

"Two men went up to pray. One was a tradition-maxxer, the other a non-denominational Protestant.

The tradition-maxxer, standing by himself, prayed thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other Christians—non-denominational, seeker-sensitive, historically untethered, content with praise bands and sermon series, and beholden to moralistic therapeutic deism. I belong to the ancient Church. I keep the fasts. I venerate the saints. I read the Fathers. I attend the long liturgies. I submit to holy tradition. I have escaped the shallowness of modern Christianity.'

But the non-denominational Protestant, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted."
