What Matters More?

Two weeks ago I mentioned that Derek Webb had a concert at ACU.

I knew it was going to be an interesting evening when he opened with A King & A Kingdom. He went on to sing Freddie, Please, a song, sung in the voice of Jesus, to Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church (who is currently in front of the Supreme Court for protesting the burials of American servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan with his "God hates fags" signs).

And, no wall flower he, Webb went on to sing What Matters More, the song the record label forced off the Stockholm Syndrome album.

The song, as Webb explained, was prompted by the Barna research showing that the #1 association non-believers have when they hear the word "Christian" is "anti-gay." What Matters More is a song where Webb asks the Christian community to revisit its priorities in light of the gospel.

And, if that weren't controversial enough, he says a bad word in the song (be warned).

  2. @ Mike, yes I remember reading a report of that. This is from memory but it went something like"

"I want to say three things to you this evening. First, in the time it will take for me to deliver this message, 50,000 children will die of preventable diseases. Second, most of you don't give a sh*t. Third, most of you are more concerend about the fact that I just said sh*t than about the deaths of those 50,000 children."

Thanks for the song Richard, loved it.
