Evening Prayer

There are times when the words of The Book of Common Prayer just strike me with their beauty. Tonight I was reading this prayer for the eventide:

O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last.
Amen.

  1. What a coincidence. I just posted an Evening Prayer from Rite One and A Collect for Saturdays on facebook. You are certainly right: many of those prayers are strikingly beautiful.

  2. That has been my "comfort prayer" for many years. Wonderful in times of anxiety and gratitude as well as eventide. A good prayer to rest against. Thanks.

  3. Having beauty pointed out in places both familiar and unfamiliar is a great gift.  Thank-you, Richard.

  4. Page 833 in BCP.  Thank you, Richard, this is one of my all time favorites!!!Jeanenne N.
